The winter school "Production and Testing of Aircraft Engines" was held on-campus in January-February 2024 for the first time in winter. 18 students of the Northwestern Polytechnical University (Xi'an, China) participated in the winter school
The academic program was developed by the Institute of Engines and Power Plants. The leader of the academic program is Dmitry Uglanov, Professor of the Thermal Engineering and Heat Engines Department.
The educational program began with an introduction class of Prokhor Almurzin about Russian technologies and scientific achievements of Soviet and Russian scientists and inventors. Then the students visited the Center for the History of Aircraft Engines, where they noticed the world's largest collection of aircraft engines and power plants! Ilya Leikovsky gave the participants a tour of the Center and a lesson on the design and construction of aircraft engines. Students enjoyed listening to the lecturer, admired the exhibits of the Center and enthusiastically performed tasks on real exhibits!
Then students visited the unique CAM center where Alexey Zhidyaev explained modern production technologies of aerospace equipment that are being developed, researched and applied at Samara University. After the class, students studied the subject "Production Technologies" that aroused great interest among the audience - the participants asked interesting and constructive questions to the lecturer about the prospects and features of the production of aircraft and rocket engines.
The next studying week was eventful and informative. Mario Morales told the guests about the combustion chambers of aircraft engines and emissions of environmentally friendly aviation fuel, and Alexander Ulanov conducted a class on the dynamics and strength of aircraft engines.
A large module of the academic program was devoted to several topics at once. Intensification of heat transfer in engines and air systems - the course was taught by Dmitry Uglanov. The guys did their homework and actively studied this topic. Turbomachines - the discipline was conducted by Oleg Baturin, associate professor of the Department of Aircraft Engine Theory named after V.P. Lukachev. The students carefully delved into the discipline and listened with interest to the lecturer. Automation of gas turbine engine control - classes were conducted by professor Georgy Makaryants, head of the Department of Aviation Technology Operation and professor of the Department of Automatic Systems of Power Plants. Students performed work in application programs and listened to the teacher with pleasure.
The intense cultural program included lots of outside activities to feel the true Russian winter. Students tried to skate on the outside ice rinks in the city, country ski in the forest, play winter balls and make snow angels. They even crossed the frozen Volga river on the hovercraft and fried marshmallows! Moreover, students attended the classical Russian ballet “Swan Lake” by Chaykovsky, partied on the Student’s Day, played quiz games, created their own vision boards for 2024 and visited lots of excursions and museums. Winter is a fantastic time to explore new activities!
Upon completion of the winter school, students received 3 ECTS certificates and souvenirs from the International Schools Department.
